Welcome
to the official web site of the Headford District Association and to our
very beautiful part of the World. Eco CampusGood news hails from Headford this week. The Eco Campus volunteers report having obtained planning permission for the Eco Campus Building project. The building pictured below will accommodate up to 42 local jobs in enterprises involved in green business activities. The Campus Building, to be located the Galway road will be a first for the area.
Headford Town, which has augmented its facilities in the last few years with the introduction of town gas, a number of new modern housing developments, a modern water treatment facility and extensive availability of broadband, is well positioned to avail of the business opportunities created by the Smart Economy. The town has a second level school hosting almost 1,000 students, ensuring a good local pool of talent. All these additions to the town have been assisted by having local political representation working close with local community groups. The project has resumed local fund raising with a target to raise €50,000 locally from the community. The first event is on March the 16th, St Patrick’s eve, with a concert in the Headford Hall by Don Stiffe and The Conquerors. Tickets are on Sale at Vincent Walsh Auctioneers /CMCC Financial Solutions / Pot Luck/ The Trading Post / Creavens Newsagents / Monaghans Shop /The Ford Crossing and from members of the committee. The theme of the Eco Campus is ‘Power of The Community’ emphasising the local enterprise nature of the project. The symbol of the Eco Campus is the Ballycurran lighthouse, ‘showing the way when the way forward is not always visible’.
A new web site on the project is also underway due for launch mid March. The group has secured funding of €500,000 from Enterprise Ireland under the Community Enterprise Scheme and is also supported with grants from Galway County Council under the Community based Economic Activity scheme. The group expect a variety of projects and enterprises to be hosted at the Campus over the coming years. Being close to both the University and the GMIT positions the location well, supporting a rural life style with a relaxed peaceful work place. The building, designed by PJ and Carl Newell aims to be an energy efficient building with the highest possible rating for its type. The project is operated by a team of volunteers under the auspices of the Headford Development Association, who donated the site from community lands on the Galway Road. The project will also create jobs during the construction phase of the project which is expected to begin later this year.
